Lost in Translation

This sign appeared in the bathroom of a very teeny remote village somewhere in China.
I think what they really mean is: "hey, there, the floor is wet, and you might fall!"

The Tailor Shop in Old Canton

Allen had 3 suits and a few shirts made here.
I had 3 suits, some pants, and some blouses made here.  So inexpensive...I should have done more!

Night Time By the Back Gate at GDUFS

There are dozens and dozens of little eateries along this street.
You know, an interesting thing happened to me today in posting this picture...I became VERY homesick
and wanting to return.

THE Absolute Worst-Tasting and Smelling Fruit of All Time!

This fruit is called DURIAN; it smells to high heaven and it tastes worse!  In my opinion......

Slippery Staircase

When I saw these stairs, it made me glad the government had constructed new ones with a railing!
In the province of someplace really beautiful with stunning mountain climbs.

I Never Could Get Adjusted to the Food!

The noodle dish tasted delicious, until I got to the bottom and saw these creatures.
I still get sick to my stomach thinking of how I was eating these and didn't know it!
YIKES!

Terra Cotta Warriors; Standing Guard at the Tomb of the First Emperor of China

It is estimated that there are 8,000 of these life-size figures.  Seeing them in person is awe-inspiring.
And amazing.

The Neighborhood Was Scary, But the Room Price Was RIght!

Chungking Mansion, where we spent several nights in Hong Kong...what a lively neighborhood, especially at night!
Cheap rates; that's what was appealing to us.

A Chinese Favorite - Chicken Feet!

Chicken feet are one of the few products that America ships to China.  The Chinese love to eat chicken feet, so American poultry farmers send their chicken feet to China.

I Thought It Was Carmel; oh so wrong - Mushrooms

It was sort of like eating rubber.  I wrapped it in a napkin and tried to hide it. Everyone else at the table enjoyed it.

Look Very Closely.....

Can you see the sweat on the front of my blouse, my hair, my forehead.  I have never experienced such heat and humidity; there was no air conditioning in this building....3rd floor, hot, hot, hot.  But, oh, I loved those students!

Living Room on the Day We Moved In; Aug 27, 2010

Our accommodations were very pleasant and very adequate.
You can see the air conditioner above the book case.
The students had no AC in their apartments.  I was grateful for AC and heat.

Foreign Experts Building Main Entrance

The doorway to the right is where we headed to go up the stairs to our 2nd floor apartment.  When it rained heavily, this floor flooded.  The front doors were ALWAYS left open, even when it was freezing cold outside.  I loved the girl who worked here...Susan.  I miss her happy personality and helpfulness.

Playground Fun; Sep 2010

The schools do not have indoor gyms, so students play all their sports outside.
The Chinese LOVE basketball.

City Dwellling

Guangzhou is a city of about 11 million, 3rd largest in China.  Most people live in apartment buildings.  Few people have air conditioning or clothes dryers; they make do in admirable ways.
